Huito 2

Jhon Warned Vargas Vargas
A combination of acrylic with natural dyes used here in this part of the Colombian Amazon, the first one is the huito, which is used by the communities of the Tikuna ethnic groups, for their ceremonial makeup and to give color to their handicrafts, this Color comes from squeezing the fruit of the American genipa, when it dries on the skin it gives dark blue tones, on paper it starts out blue and oxidizes to sepia tones. The other pigment is the achiote (Bixa orellana), a shrub from which a reddish-orange pigment is extracted from its seed, used by many pre-Columbian cultures to paint their bodies, their art, and season their cuisine. In this part of the Colombian Amazon, the Yagua ethnic group uses this pigment the most in their traditional ceremonies. The last dye used is canyiru, a plant from whose leaves the Tikuna ethnic group extracts a red earth pigment which they use to paint their handicrafts.
